Branch Cutters Steel Guide

Branch Cutters come in either Stainless Steel or Carbon Steel, These steels can have advantages and disadvantages and can also Vary in price. Use the quick guide below to understand what steel might be right for you.

Carbon Steel

Carbon steel is a strong steel that holds its edge very well, meaning less sharpening over the years, which leads to longer blade life. The trade-off for this hardness is the ability to rust quickly. Carbon steel tools will need to be cleaned and oiled to protect them. Another upside to this hardness is the ability to get a finer edge, resulting in sharper blades. a standard carbon steel is also generally cheaper.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel bonsai tools have come a long way in the last few years. Stainless steel has the obvious advantage of being rust resistant, which means there is less maintenance. However, stainless steel is a softer steel than carbon steel, so the blades will dull quicker and require more sharpening. If buying stainless steel, make sure you know exactly what stainless the tool is made from, as quality can vary dramatically. Kikuwa stainless steel tools are among the best on the market. You won’t see stainless steel in branch cutters above 210mm from reputable brands, as the soft nature of stainless cannot handle the tensile stress that comes with using a larger tool and is prone to damage.

Small ( 170mm )

These small branch cutters are good for Shohin material where branching is dense and small and spaces are tight. the smaller size of the branch cutters will mean the tolerance of the branch size they can cut is lower but if the cutters are in proportion to the tree you shouldn't have anything that is thicker then these branch cutters can handle.

Medium ( 205mm )

This size branch cutter is the most common size and probably the first size you should purchase if just starting out. These can handle larger branches then the small size and fit the widest range of work out of all the sizes. This size does have its limitations though so if you are working with much larger material consider the larger size branch cutter.

Large ( 270mm )

These are the largest size and are for removing bigger branches, you will probably use these more for developing stock that needs major pruning more then you will use them for refined bonsai unless you have very large material. Like the other sizes these do have a limit to the size of branch they can cut and if they are too small then consider a pruning saw for anything larger.
